Pearl shopping in Boracay
One of the things that I enjoyed doing in Boracay is the pearl jewelry shopping. It is situated within bodies of water, which explains the abundance of the jewelry. They are everywhere. From the clusters of boutiques and specialty stores within D’Mall to the peddlers and vendors all around the island.
It is fairly easy to spot a fake pearl and in an island like Boracay. I would guess that it would be more expensive to produce a fake pearl than get hold of a real one. They say that rubbing the pearl jewelry against your teeth is the way to spot a fake pearl. Real ones will have a gritty feel while the fake ones would feel smooth. There is some truth to it, but the thing about it is it is not the most accurate measure. When you look at a pearl using a magnifying glass and it is fake you will not see the ridges of a real pearl. A real one have variations in color. This is what I learned recently, even as it took me a while to pick out pairs from the bunch of pearls that were sold.
It should also interest you to know that very often it is will be wiser to buy from the peddlers and vendors around the beach area. When they see that you have been there a while, they will sell you the pearls half the price compared to the prices from the stores. All real pearls at that. Most pearls that are sold there were fresh water pearls. Nothing like the akoya ones. But the luster and iridescence, rainbow like play of colors are there just the same.
Pearls are produced inside oysters brought about by its (oyster’s) defense mechanism. Obviously a product of nature and real beauty to behold. Make sure you do not miss out on pearl shopping when you visit Boracay island. This is the one thing I look forward to in our next visit.
